Clinical hematological studies on anemia in malignant conditions


Abstract
It has has long been known that various hematologic abnormalities including anemia, hemorrhagic tendency and immunologic abnormalities could be encountered among the patients with various malignant tumors. , On
the other hand, the occurrence of thrombophlebitis and other thromboembolic phenomenon could also be . seen -
among the patients, with -malignant tumors such as cancers of pancreas, lung, prostate,,_ ovary and breast.
Inadequate intake, absorption and storage of iron, folic acid and vitamin_ BL,, diminished production of erythropoietin, increased .destruction of erythrocyte as well as:mechanical interference of hemopoiesis in the bone marrow have been considered by many investigators, to be underlying factors in causing anemia of malignant conditions.
In this series of study author attempted to investigate on the-anemia in various malignat tumors including . forty-four cases of stomach cancer, twelve cases of lymphoma,¢¥ nine cases of lung cancer, seven cases. of hepatoma and five cases of pancreas cancer. Laboratory tests included in this studies were routine CBC such as Rbc count; hemoglobin and Wintrobg indices.
Tollowh g are the, autho?s conclusions:


1) Total of seventy-seven cases of, patients with malignant conditions including stomach cancer, lung cancer, lymphoma, hepatoma and cancer of the pancreas were the subjects of present study.
2) Most severe degree of anemia were. to be observe in the liver cancer group. where as the less degree¢¥ in the pancreatic cancer group. -
3) As seen through Wintrobe indices tendency to macrocytic and hypochromic anemia.
